Those were the glory days of family therapy. With Al and Eva (Hitchcock) Leveton operating the Family Therapy Center of San Francisco, and Marty Kirschenbaum and Shirley Luthman running the Family Therapy Institute of Marin, we had great models. Al and Eva were active in the Association, had an excellent staff and taught classes in beginning and intermediate family therapy. Marty and Shirley also had an excellent staff and taught a terrific advanced course in family therapy, complete with training behind a one way mirror. Marty and Shirley put on demonstrations and classes around the country, and even taught in Sweden, where one time Marty came back with a young Swedish wife.
There were many interesting members who attended meetings and who presented at meetings. The top sex therapists in the area, Harvey Caplan and Rebecca Black, were active members. We had interesting monthly meetings, and our annual meetings were really special, always with nationally prominent presenters (Virginia Satir and Carl Whittaker just to name a few), and once four psychiatrists from Italy who had done extensive work with anorexia and bulimia (Gianfranco Cecchin, Mara Selvini Palazzoli, Giuliana Prata and Luigi Boscolo) presented for the weekend in Soquel.
Over and above all the information we observed and learned, there was a feeling of closeness between the members that was really nice. We enjoyed seeing and being with each other at the monthly meetings and especially at Greenwood Lodge where we took up the whole property. Every October, we felt like we were “coming home” !
I applaud the present members who are working so hard to recapture the feeling of the Association in those glory days. I would encourage every member to do their part and to contribute more by joining the Council in order to achieve such a goal.
All the best to all of you, and enjoy the Associastion.
